Hensel Jr. and Zimmerman claim first checkered flag.
It was back to regular racing at Wayne County Speedway Saturday night with the Fast Four racing program presented by City Service Towing and Good Ole Boys Trucking plus the second Kid’s Bike races sponsored by the Kar Connection and of course, a little bit of rain to slow the program down as right after the Sprint feature the skies opened up briefly to soak the track but the track crew got the racing surface back to racing condition and able to finish the nights races.
Wooster’s Dean Jacobs would lead all the way to score his second Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprint win and expand his O’Reilly Auto Parts ‘Race to the Championship’ points lead. It was not an easy win for the B &B Drain Service, Gressman Motorsports and McClure Motorsports #9 as he had to hold off several challenges from Andrew Palker. On lap three, Palker would start his first challenge as he took second from Clay Riney and quickly was on the back bumper of Jacobs but on lap 12, Palker went to the low side of turn one and two but he would spin out and brought out the caution and would restart 13th. All during the first half of the feature, a tight battle was going on for third place between Henry Malcuit, Riney, Trey Jacobs and Mitch Harble until Palker’s spin which then made it a race for second as Dean Jacobs would be able to build up a half straightaway lead. Malcuit and Trey Jacobs would be in the second and third spots on lap 19 and on the next circuit, fourth place Riney’s car would break a wheel and send him into the turn one wall and also collecting Harble’s machine, bringing out the red flag and ending their chances of a tip five finish. During the red flag time, Trey Jacobs discovered he had a broken throttle spring and once the track went back to caution after the red flag, his crew could not get the problem fixed and that ended his race. So now it was Jacobs, Malcuit and Palker in the top three. Palker would move past Malcuit for second as the race went back to green and tried to chase down Jacobs again but Malcuit would not be deterred from Palker’s pass and kept the pressure on and with three laps to go Palker would bounce off the dirt wall going into turn three as Malcuit would reclaim second as Jacobs started to pull away again. Palker would recover from his slip up and regain second on the next lap but could not make another challenge on Jacobs in the last two laps to finish second. Malcuit ended up third for the second time this season as Danny Mumaw and Tom Schinderle would fill out the top five. Palker and Trey Jacobs topped the heat wins.
After the rain delay, the Malcuit’s Tavern Super Late Models would roll out for their 25 lap main event with J R Gentry out racing front row partner Charlie Duncan into turn one for the top spot. Duncan’s race would only last 4 laps as he went to the pits at that point and that would move points leader Doug Drown into second and he wasted no time in catching up to Gentry. The side by side battle would begin on lap seven and the fast pace duo would start to close in on the back markers and on lap 17. With Gentry on the high side of the track and Drown on the low side, the winning move would come on lap 19 as they went into turns three and four with a lap car in front of them, Drown and his Ely Road Reel Company, ABR Farms and 89 Homes #12 was able to get by while Gentry had to check up for just a split second on the back marker and that was all it took. Drown would stretch his lead out in the final laps for his second win and Gentry took a WCS season best second place. Ryan Markham ran third followed by Mitch Caskey and Cody Scott. Justin Chance pocketed the Kar Connection Hard Charger award as he picked up 6 positions from his starting spot. Heat winners were Drown and Duncan.
In the last couple of seasons, Gary Hensel Jr. as been knocking on the Summit Racing victory lane’s door more than anybody else and Saturday night he found the key to unlocking that door in impressive style as he went flag to flag for his first win aboard the D J Services, Lorentz Lawncare, and J & M Carpentry #28h. The Apple Creek driver started on the pole of the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock feature and with the race going caution free, drove away from the field as the race was on for second place. Don Rutt held that position from lap two until lap 13 when John Wilson took over second but he had no chance of catching Hensel Jr. in the last two circuits. Rutt would end up third, his best finish so far this year. Points leader and four time winner Doug Drown had a flat tire in his heat race and started last in the feature and worked his way up to 4th when the checkered flag waved with Brandon Craver collecting fifth place. Don Baney, who was scheduled to start pole of the feature but pulled off the track before the green flag and Hensel Jr. scored the heat wins.
Doug Hensel took the lead from the pole position of the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stock feature but Orrville’s Wyatt Zimmerman started right behind Hensel and would hound him for the opening ten laps of the twelve lap feature. As the pair came out of turn four for the tenth time, Zimmerman was able to power the Rumpke, Jerry’s Café and Paul Davis Construction #14z underneath Hensel’s machine and then take his first ever feature checkered flag. Brent Boreman would run third until lap ten when Wes Staley edged past and finish third with Boreman hanging on to fourth in front of Brad Hensel. Posting the heat wins were Tyler Wiles, Doug Hensel and Brad Hensel.
All drivers were once again competing for the Contingency Connection’s Racer’s Rewards prizes that are earned on a weekly and season long basis.
Next Saturday night, July 6, ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ will host the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association for the second time this year while the McKenzie Concrete Super Stocks will have their second Stake’s Shortstop ‘Summer Series’ race and the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks also competing in their second NewFast Motorsports ‘Summer Series’ race. On the racing card will be the Modifieds and for the first time in a couple of seasons will be the Mod Lites. Gates will open at 4 pm and racing at 7 pm.
